By precisely controlling the atomic position of metal active sites, we have redesigned electrostatically polar MgO materials to facilitate hydrogen movement. This allows rapid interconversion between hydrogen, proton, and hydride that can alleviate the long-standing hydrogen poisoning problem.

The enabling of an uninterrupted pathway for protons to hop across has opened up new avenues for hydrogen storage, hydrogenation, and dehydrogenation catalysis.
